During his TEDTalk interview in February 2013, Elon Musk was asked “what kind of crazy dream would persuade you to think of trying to take on the auto industry and build an all-electric car?” After all, wasn’t this attempted before and squashed by the auto industry? (check out the 2006 documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car”). His answer came down to this fundamental issue, “I thought about, what are the problems that are most likely to affect the future of the world or the future of humanity? I think it's extremely important that we have sustainable transport and sustainable energy production. That sort of overall sustainable energy problem is the biggest problem that we have to solve this century”. Not just an environmental issue, it comes down to the depletion of our fossil fuel energy supply. It’s going to run out and we need a better solution.

Tesla Motors is breaking the world into the realistic consideration of electric cars again. The high price of their current models currently makes them more of a status symbol for specific type of consumer, but the hope of a better, more sustainable automobile for the masses is the real excitement for all of us. Although there are still some issues with Tesla’s electric cars such as the recent news of cars catching on fire, it is important to note that the percentage of Tesla’s catching on fire is still less than conventional vehicles. With any new technology there will undoubtedly be issues. Elon Musk’s track record of successful startups gives us hope. His approach to problem solving is not only ground breaking, its proven successful. We’re excited for him and Tesla to take on the problem of sustainability in the form of automobiles.
